The Hempfield School Board in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, approved a new science curriculum by an 8-1 vote, aiming to enhance students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The curriculum, which will be implemented in the 2023-24 school year, was developed over two years with input from teachers, administrators, and curriculum specialists. It focuses on inquiry-based learning and aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards, covering topics from life sciences to physical sciences across all grade levels. The lone dissenting vote came from board member Grant Keener, who expressed concerns about the curriculum's alignment with state standards and its potential impact on student performance. Despite this, the majority of the board felt the new curriculum would better prepare students for future academic and career challenges.
