The Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia over allegations that its Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) discriminated against Asian American students in its admissions process. The probe follows a referral from Virginia Atty. Gen. Jason Miyares, who announced on Wednesday that his office found reasonable cause that FCPS violated the Virginia Human Rights Act and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating allegations of racial discrimination at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia, following a lawsuit filed by the Pacific Legal Foundation on behalf of a group of parents. The lawsuit claims that the school's new admissions policy, which eliminated standardized testing and implemented a more holistic review process, discriminates against Asian American students. The policy change resulted in a significant drop in the percentage of Asian American students admitted to the school, from 73% in the class of 2024 to 54% in the class of 2025. The investigation by the DOJ's Civil Rights Division aims to determine if the school's admissions practices violate federal laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, or national origin.
