PALO ALTO, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ SpringSource ], a division of VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) and the leader in Java application infrastructure and management, today announced that [ Brandeis University ], a private research university, has deployed SpringSource Hyperic to monitor its network infrastructure of more than 350 platforms running on VMware. As a result, the IT staff at Brandeis can address system availability issues quickly, as opposed to previously relying on user reports of outages or performance problems.

"SpringSource Hyperic has allowed us to proactively identify problems and dig deeper into our services in order to ensure system stability which is critical to the daily operation of the university."

SpringSource Hyperic offers the most complete solution for managing and monitoring large scale web infrastructures and mission-critical applications. The solution is part of SpringSourcea™s full product line, which includes solutions to build, run and manage Java applications. SpringSource Java infrastructure is lean, modern and ideally suited for virtual and cloud environments.

Before adopting SpringSource Hyperic, Brandeis relied on an antiquated monitoring system comprised of Zabbix and Netsaint Network Monitor (now called Nagios), which did not provide the real-time performance metrics the university needed. Brandeis chose Hyperic because of its ease of use and its ability to most effectively monitor its virtualized applications. After implementing Hyperic, the auto-discovery function capability allowed the team to identify and solve problems before they affected daily university operations.

aBeing able to easily install the Hyperic agent and having it automatically discover a problem for us was a significant advantage,a said Nick Ragusa, system engineering manager at Brandeis University. aSpringSource Hyperic has allowed us to proactively identify problems and dig deeper into our services in order to ensure system stability which is critical to the daily operation of the university.a

Hyperic delivers the following business results to Brandeis University:

  • High System Availabilitya"With Hyperic, Brandeis is seeing better system stability and uptime, and the number of complaints about system performance is substantially lower.
  • Fast Response Timea"Hyperic notification system has allowed the System Engineering Team to cut down response time from hours and even days to instantaneous, consequently improving the end user experience.
  • Enhanced System Performancea"Hyperic helped Brandeis enhance system performance by delivering extensive insight, enabling the engineering team to identify hidden problems that would otherwise be extremely difficult to detect.
  • Maximized Investment in Existing Infrastructurea"Hyperic allows Brandeis to identify areas where IT improvements need to be made.

aSpringSource Hyperic provides deep insight into application performance, even on virtual and cloud infrastructures, and that allows entities such as Brandeis to see where certain parts of their infrastructure can be tuned,a said Shaun Connolly, vice president of product management for the SpringSource division of VMware. aIn addition, universities cannot depend on end users to monitor for problems. SpringSource Hyperic alerts engineers to issues before they occur, significantly improving the end-user experience.a
