  • An upcoming NASA mission will feature a major piece of technology designed by a team of researchers from the University of New Hampshire.

The article from MSN discusses the University of New Hampshire's (UNH) involvement in NASA's Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission. UNH's Space Science Center is contributing by developing key scientific instruments for the mission, which aims to explore the heliosphere, the protective bubble around our solar system created by the solar wind. The IMAP mission will study how particles from the sun interact with interstellar space, providing insights into the heliosphere's structure, the acceleration of particles, and the dynamics of the solar wind. This mission, set to launch in 2025, will help scientists understand the protective mechanisms of our solar system against cosmic radiation and could have implications for space weather forecasting and astronaut safety. UNH's contributions include the development of the Compact Dual Ion Composition Experiment (CoDICE) and the Solar Wind Electron Experiment (SWIPE), which are crucial for measuring ion and electron properties in space.
