Record number of Japan teachers on mental illness leave in FY 2023

When including teachers who took sick leave for over a month, the number rose to 13,045, or 1.42 per cent of the total.

In fiscal year 2023, Japan saw a record high of 6,539 teachers taking leave due to mental health issues, marking a significant increase from the previous year's 5,993. This surge, reported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, reflects a growing trend of mental health challenges among educators, with the number of affected teachers having more than doubled over the past decade. The primary reasons cited for these leaves include the stress from handling students' behavioral issues, excessive workload, and the pressure of dealing with parents. This situation has led to discussions on the need for better support systems for teachers, including workload reduction and mental health support, to address this escalating crisis in the education sector.
