Openwave Uncovers North American Mobile Internet Trends
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. & BARCELONA, Spain--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), one of the world's leading software innovators enabling revenue-generating personalized services which converge the mobile and broadband experience, today revealed some key usage trends for the mobile internet in North America, based on its Mobile Analytics product. One theme in particular is that social networking is the number one area of interest to the mobile internet user. The top two search terms on both Google and Yahoo! OneSearch were the major social networking sites Facebook and MySpace, suggesting a significant appetite for mobile social networking. In addition to the named social networks, ‘social networking' was also the top category of search terms found by Openwave's research.
Reflecting the trend that social networks and carriers may be underserving mobile social networking is the fact that the mobile-tailored social network Mocospace, a Boston-based startup that provides a social network for mobile phone users, attracted far more of mobile internet users' time. Mocospace users spent an average of 6.05 minutes online per session, versus MySpace's 3.79 minutes and Facebook's 1.89 minutes, suggesting that more effort to tailor social networking sites to the mobile environment could lead to greater data usage and customer satisfaction.
"Barriers that were slowing mobile internet usage have been falling, permitting the more recent rise of the mobile internet," said Kathleen Brush, vice president of marketing, Openwave. "More than ever operators are facing challenges to make the mobile internet experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible for their subscribers. By turning mobile internet usage data into an understanding of subscriber behavior, operators can use that knowledge to improve all aspects of the subscriber experience, including making it easier for subscribers to access and interact with social networking when on the go."
Openwave, traditionally known for scalable, reliable mobile and broadband infrastructure solutions, has been building its portfolio of solutions and services that help operators monitor, manage, and monetize the mobile internet. The company's Mobile Analytics product is one of these new solutions.
In addition, Openwave has been conducting regular webinars on the subject of analytics, attracting attendance from more than 500 companies. One of the most pressing questions that attendees have inquired about is how to manage the countless concerns related to subscriber privacy.
"We are planning an upcoming webinar that focuses on issues related to subscriber privacy, offering advice on how operators can implement manageable opt-in/opt-out practices, and avoid privacy violations," said Brush. "Openwave is committed to being a leading provider of mobile analytics. We expect to announce our next generation of mobile analytics solutions in the second quarter of 2009 that promises to deliver functionality to help operators better manage and monetize mobile internet users," said Brush.
Openwave provides mobile analytics to Tier 1 and Tier 2 mobile operators globally. By delivering intelligence about their customers' usage patterns, Openwave Mobile Analytics helps operators drive adoption, minimize churn, improve usage and increase revenues.
