  • A new study led by the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has identified significant safety risks in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), especially compared to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

The article from MSN discusses a study published in the journal Nature Energy, which highlights potential safety concerns with sodium-ion batteries. Researchers from the University of Bath and the Faraday Institution discovered that sodium-ion batteries, considered as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, face significant safety hazards due to the formation of sodium clusters. These clusters can lead to short circuits and thermal runaway, where the battery overheats and potentially catches fire or explodes. The study points out that while sodium-ion batteries could offer advantages like lower cost and reduced reliance on scarce materials, their safety issues need to be addressed before they can be widely adopted in commercial applications. The findings underscore the importance of further research into the stability and safety of sodium-ion technology to mitigate these risks.
