South Korean researchers have unveiled a revolutionary sodium-ion battery that can charge in seconds. Spearheaded by a team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the innovation positions sodium as a promising alternative to lithium in energy storage technology.

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have developed a groundbreaking sodium-ion battery that can charge in just seconds, offering a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries. This new battery technology utilizes sodium, which is abundant and less expensive than lithium, potentially reducing costs and dependency on lithium mining. The key innovation lies in the use of a hybrid anode made from a combination of aluminum and nanostructured carbon, which allows for rapid ion movement, enabling the battery to charge much faster than traditional batteries. This advancement could have significant implications for electric vehicles, grid storage, and portable electronics, providing a more sustainable and efficient energy storage solution. The research, published in the journal *Advanced Materials*, highlights the potential for sodium-ion batteries to offer high power density and long cycle life, addressing some of the critical limitations of current battery technologies.
