Solar3D Successfully Completes Design of a Key Element of Its High Efficiency Solar Cell
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Solar3D, Inc. (OTCBB: SLTD), the developer of a breakthrough 3-dimensional solar cell technology to maximize the conversion of sunlight into electricity, today announced that it has completed the design of the Light Collector section, a critical part of its novel solar cell.
"With that understanding, we will soon know what the increase in efficiency will be with our new cell relative to current technology."
Inspired by light management techniques used in fiber optic devices, the companya™s innovative solar cell technology utilizes a 3-dimensional design to trap sunlight inside micro-photovoltaic structures where photons bounce around until they are converted into electrons. Solar3Da™s management believes that this breakthrough solar cell design will dramatically change the economics of solar energy.
aOur innovative solar cell design has two main sections: a Light Collector section coupled with a Micro-Photovoltaic section. The completion of the Light Collector design is the key to expediting the entire project,a commented Jim Nelson, President and CEO of Solar3D. aThe structure of every other element of the cell is dictated by the Light Collector and flows from its design. While the design element is complete now, we expect minor modifications to further fabricate a prototype.a
With the completion of the Light Collector design, the companya™s research and development team believes that they can soon calculate the increase in efficiency that the overall 3-demensional solar cell can achieve.
aThe Light Collector was the first giant step. We will now be able to know how much of the light will come through to the absorbing structure,a continued Nelson aWith that understanding, we will soon know what the increase in efficiency will be with our new cell relative to current technology.a
The companya™s management believes that with the achievement of this milestone, Solar3D is ahead of its schedule to complete a working prototype by year-end.
About Solar3D, Inc.
Solar3D, Inc. is developing a breakthrough 3-dimensional solar cell technology to maximize the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Up to 30% of incident sunlight is currently reflected off the surface of conventional solar cells, and more is lost inside the solar cell materials. Inspired by light management techniques used in fiber optic devices, our innovative solar cell technology utilizes a 3-dimensional design to trap sunlight inside micro-photovoltaic structures where photons bounce around until they are converted into electrons. This next generation solar cell will be dramatically more efficient, resulting in a lower cost per watt that will make solar power affordable for the world.
