OTTAWA, CANADA--(Marketwire - June 24, 2010) - Zarlink Semiconductor (TSX:ZL) and CADEKA Microcircuits today co-launched a collaborative reference design that simplifies development and decreases power requirements of switching systems used to connect multiple analog video sources with monitoring and recording equipment in security and surveillance systems.

"The video surveillance market represents new growth opportunities for our traditional telecom products, as operators seek high-performance, lower cost solutions to support multi-camera home, commercial and industrial security systems," said David Sng, product marketing manager with Zarlink's Telecom Networking group. "Our new reference design combines our field-proven crosspoint switch products for high-reliability telecom applications with CADEKA's video knowledge. The integrated solution simplifies design, lowers power consumption and reduces board space requirements, enabling operators to deploy economical, scalable multi-camera systems that deliver performance exceeding standard definition video requirements."

The closed circuit television (CCTV) and video surveillance market is growing due to an increasing worldwide focus on implementing and maintaining sound security measures. According to company research, the global CCTV market is expected to grow by 22 percent annually to reach US$28 billion by 2013. Developing countries represent a significant new market for analog video surveillance applications, in particular residential and multi-tenant dwelling security applications where deployment and operating costs are key concerns.

Complete design for low-bandwidth video applications

The collaborative reference design (ZLAN-268) meets all application requirements for low bandwidth analog video switching to connect up to 16 video camera feeds with eight output devices, including monitors and recording systems. The reference design is fully supported by the ZLE8816 demonstration kit to help speed customer design time.

The fully buffered 8x16 crosspoint switch matrix reference design utilizes CADEKA's CLC2005 dual channel video amplifier, and Zarlink's MT8816 8x16 analog switch array. Both devices operate from a single 5 volt (V) supply, providing a significant competitive advantage versus many ±5V solutions used today. The CLC2005 buffers the inputs of the MT8816 and provides gain and drive capability for each MT8816 output. Each channel of the CLC2005 can drive three video loads, allowing for increased system capability. The MT8816 offers designers ease-of-use and flexibility by providing eight inputs that can be switched to any of the 16 outputs, or 16 inputs that can be switched to any of the eight outputs.

The new reference design provides video surveillance system designers a low cost solution with performance that exceeds the requirements of standard definition video. For full scale video, the reference design offers -3 decibels (dB) bandwidth of 35 megahertz (MHz), differential gain/phase of 0.16%/0.33°, and signal-to-noise ratio better than 90 dB.

Demo Kit Available Now

The ZLE8816 demonstration kit, available now, allows customers to easily evaluate the reference design. The kit includes an evaluation board, AC adapter to supply power to the board, and software to allow PC controlled channel selection. Both CADEKA and Zarlink provide application notes fully describing the reference design and demo kit usage.
