  • In a new National Postdoctoral Association report, 43% of postdocs said Trump administration policies have threatened their positions, while more than one-third said their research is delayed or in jeopardy.

The article from STAT News discusses the ongoing crisis in the postdoctoral research community, highlighting findings from a survey conducted by the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA). The survey reveals that postdocs are facing significant challenges including low pay, job insecurity, and lack of benefits, which have been exacerbated by the economic impacts of the Trump administration's policies and the broader funding constraints at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Despite promises of increased research funding, the actual support for postdocs has not seen substantial improvement, leading to a demoralized workforce contemplating leaving academia. The NPA survey underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to improve the postdoctoral experience, including better compensation, clearer career pathways, and enhanced support systems to retain talented researchers in science.
