  • Graduate and undergraduate students at three university-led teams will try to solve aviation challenges and improve flight in the 21st century, NASA announced on Tuesday.

NASA has selected three university teams to tackle significant aviation challenges as part of its University Leadership Initiative (ULI). The teams, from the University of Texas at El Paso, Purdue University, and the University of California, San Diego, will focus on different aspects of aviation technology. The University of Texas at El Paso will work on improving the efficiency of electric aircraft propulsion systems, aiming to reduce energy consumption and enhance performance. Purdue University's project involves developing advanced air mobility concepts, focusing on the integration of autonomous and piloted aircraft into the national airspace. Meanwhile, the University of California, San Diego will explore innovative methods for reducing aircraft noise, particularly during landing and takeoff, to mitigate community impact. These initiatives are part of NASA's broader effort to advance sustainable aviation technologies and address environmental concerns.
