Students explore engineering through Future City competition
- Students from in and around Central Pennsylvania faced off in the annual Future City competition Saturday. "We started this 20 years ago," said cofounder of the Central PA chapter, William Sutton. "The whole mission for us is to make engineering exciting and accessible for young kids.
The article from MSN discusses the Future City Competition, an educational event where middle school students from across the U.S. engage in a project-based learning experience focused on engineering and urban planning. In this competition, students design and build models of future cities, tackling real-world issues like sustainability, energy, and infrastructure. The event not only fosters creativity and problem-solving skills but also introduces students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields through hands-on activities. Participants use software like SimCity to plan their cities, write essays on their city's theme, and construct scale models. The competition culminates in regional and national events where students present their work, gaining insights from engineers and other professionals, thus providing a platform for students to explore potential career paths in engineering and related fields.
