The Geminids meteor shower peaks at the end of the week. Here's what to expect

The Geminids are one of the best and most visible annual meteor showers, when at least 120 meteors can usually be seen per hour. But 2024 will be different, thanks to the year's final full moon.

The Geminids meteor shower, known for its spectacular display of up to 120 meteors per hour, is set to peak on the night of December 13 into the early morning of December 14. This year, the viewing conditions are expected to be favorable as the moon will be in its waning crescent phase, providing a darker sky for better visibility. The meteors, which appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini, are actually debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. For the best experience, observers are advised to find a location away from city lights, allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness, and look towards the east after midnight. The Geminids are unique because they are associated with an asteroid rather than a comet, and they are known for their bright, fast, and often colorful meteors.
