Not only are they the smallest among us, but premature children also face health and life challenges that make them the most vulnerable. Generally speaking, they have a slightly higher risk of mortality due to illness.

A recent study published in the journal *JAMA Network Open* has indicated that women who were born prematurely face a higher risk of suicide later in life. The research, which analyzed data from over 1.5 million individuals born in Sweden between 1973 and 2014, found that women born very preterm (before 32 weeks of gestation) had a 30% increased risk of suicide compared to those born at full term. This risk was even higher for those born extremely preterm (before 28 weeks), with a 50% increase. The study suggests that the stress and health challenges associated with premature birth might contribute to mental health issues in adulthood, although the exact mechanisms linking prematurity to suicide risk are not fully understood. The findings underscore the importance of long-term mental health monitoring and support for individuals born prematurely.
