Tablet running Android on this highly advanced dual-core multimedia platform featured now at Mobile World Congress
Quanta Computer, the world's largest manufacturer of notebook computers, has selected ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, to power its most-advanced LTE tablets. Today at Mobile World Congress, the companies are demonstrating a tablet running Android on ST-Ericsson's just-announced Nova™ A9500 application processor, powered by a Thor™ M700 LTE modem, demonstrating voice calls, streaming video, web browsing and other advanced multimedia services connected to a LTE network.
The 10.1 inch tablet reference design, which can be used to rapidly develop commercial products, is based on the NovaThor product family, ST-Ericsson's new range of complete smartphone and tablet platforms. An industry first, these platforms integrate leading-edge dual-core application processors with mobile broadband thin modems that help provide consumers with a compelling and immersive multimedia experience. Tablet and smartphone makers will be able to combine ST-Ericsson's industry-leading LTE-FDD, LTE-TDD, HSPA+ 21Mbps and TD- SCDMA modems with its powerful application processors into complete, highly- integrated solutions.
"Quanta aims to expand its leadership in notebook computers to the fast- growing tablet market. Our cooperation with ST-Ericsson will help ensure that our customers are able to quickly roll out tablets based on the most-advanced platforms available," said Terrisa Chung, vice president of Quanta Computer. "In 2011, we are bringing consumers a new breed of tablets that can connect to the most advanced wireless networks, providing high-speed Internet access both inside and outside the home."
"We are excited to be working with Quanta to help deliver devices that mobile operators and consumers are looking for," said Pascal Langlois, senior vice president, chief sales and marketing officer at ST-Ericsson. "Mobile operators want devices that can take advantage of the growing LTE and HSPA+ 21Mbps networks, and consumers want the most demanding applications and services at lightning speed. This tablet, using our Nova A9500 application processor, powered by a Thor M700 LTE modem, is one such device. With our innovative NovaThor smartphone and tablet platforms, we help our customers deliver the most advanced wireless devices to the market."
The tablet demonstrated by Quanta and ST-Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress contains an LTE-FDD modem, which is designed for use in paired FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) spectrum.
Notes to Editors
In October 2010, ST-Ericsson and Quanta Computer demonstrated advanced multimedia applications on a tablet connected to LTE-TDD network at the closing ceremony of Expo 2010 Shanghai China. LTE-TDD uses unpaired TDD (Time Division Duplex) spectrum.
The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSMA) said in January that 17 operators have commercially launched LTE networks in Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Norway, Poland, Sweden, USA, and Uzbekistan. The GSMA added that 128 operators in 52 countries have committed to deploy LTE networks (either LTE-FDD or LTE-TDD).
