JDSU Tunable XFP Shipments Surpass Legacy 300 Pin Transponders as Networks Evolve to Support Bandwidth Boom
MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwire - February 17, 2011) - JDSU (
Tunable XFP products are used to send and receive signals within optical networks. They provide a dramatically smaller, flexible and cost effective solution compared to legacy products such as 300 pin transponders. Network providers are upgrading to this highly integrated solution as they evolve networks to support growth of popular applications that are flooding optical networks such as online video.
JDSU was the first optical vendor to provide a tunable XFP to the industry and has shipped 25,000 units since it became available in late 2009. JDSU offers the broadest portfolio of tunable XFP solutions, with variants that provide increased performance for the metro, regional and long haul segments of optical networks.
"Carriers I've spoken to love the tunable XFP and feel it is suitable for deployment in the majority of C-band links in the network," said Andrew Schmitt, directing analyst, Optical, at Infonetics Research. "We expect the market to reach $100M in 2012, up from less than $30M in 2010, as it replaces both 300-pin and fixed C-band XFPs."
"The tunable XFP is revolutionizing the industry by providing a highly integrated and cost effective way for our customers to get the most performance out of their networks," said Alan Lowe, president of Communications and Commercial Optical Products at JDSU. "The fact that it is now outpacing 300 pin solutions reflects the overwhelmingly positive response we've gotten from customers that are adopting the tunable XFP."
Tunable XFP Benefits
85% smaller size - The tunable XFP is highly integrated as a result of JDSU engineering processes, and is about the size of a pack of gum. This provides network operators with much more real estate in network racks.
75% less powerdissipation - Equates to lower electrical and cooling costs in network centers.
Pluggable - Network providers can provision only interfaces that are needed, with the flexibility to rapidly add more in a "pay as you grow" fashion.
Tunable - The tunable XFP can be used as a universal source to lower inventory holding costs. Older products required network operators to predict demand for fixed products, often resulting in supply shortages.
Performance - Variants of the Tunable XFP are available to support performance in metro/regional and long haul portions of the network.
