PLYMOUTH, MI--(Marketwire - January 27, 2011) - Perceptron, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ PRCP ]), a leading provider of information-based process improvement solutions for non-contact measurement and inspection applications, today announced that its automated gauging solutions have been selected by a leading German automotive manufacturer for deployment on a new premium vehicle program. Installation of the systems has begun and will be on-going over the next several months.

A total of 20 dimensional gauging systems will be strategically distributed throughout the entire manufacturing process in order to fully leverage Perceptron's central server database architecture and powerful cross-gauge analysis capability. The distributed gauging philosophy will afford a unique, real-time view of the production process, allowing the customer to make highly-refined adjustments and instantaneously evaluate the results. This immediate feedback will also aid in efforts to reduce process variation and optimize overall vehicle quality as it provides more effective troubleshooting tools and faster root cause detection.

Harry Rittenour, Perceptron President and CEO, stated, "This new program is the most comprehensive, distributed dimensional gauging system we have ever installed and represents a significant paradigm shift for one of our most important and forward-thinking customers. We are exceptionally pleased by their decision to make Perceptron an integral part of their quality control strategy for this new program."

In the same facility, the customer will also deploy not one, but two instances of Perceptron's automated gap and flush measurement solution; one in the body shop and one in the trim and final area. This innovative closed-loop configuration will compare and contrast critical build characteristics measured at the beginning and at the end of the final assembly process, thereby providing a more detailed understanding of how the process itself affects product quality.

Rittenour added, "We are very excited about the benefits that can be derived from this distributed gauging approach, and we are steadfastly dedicated to providing our customers with the tools required to successfully implement such an innovative strategy."
