SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - May 18, 2010) - Micrel, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ MCRL ]), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched two new high performance, low drop-out (LDO) regulators for portable and space constrained electronics. The [ MIC5387 ] extends Micrel's ever shrinking LDO regulator products by achieving an ultra small triple output LDO in a 1.6 x 1.6mm Thin MLF® package size which is a greater than 57 percent reduction when compared to the industry standard 2mm x 3mm MLF® package. This new 150mA Triple LDO family is ideally suited for a wide range of battery-powered electronic applications including mobile phones, personal navigation devices (PND), portable media players (PMP), digital still cameras (DSC), notebook computers, personal digital assistants (PDA), and handheld instruments. The [ MIC5387 ] is currently available in volume quantities with pricing starting at $0.30 for 1K quantities. For feature-rich applications, the triple output LDO [ MIC5385 ] is provided in a 2mm x 2mm Thin MLF® package and is available at $0.32 for 1K quantities. Samples can now be ordered on line on Micrel's web site at: [ http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do ].

"When compared to the industry 2mm x 3mm MLF® package, the 1.6mm x 1.6mm Thin MLF® provides portable system designers the smallest footprint," noted Andy Khayat, director of Micrel's portable product group. "This new series of high performance LDOs offer excellent overall performance and value for very high volume handheld electronics."

This new series of triple LDOs not only addresses the need for the smallest solution in the market but also feature an extensive voltage range options down to 1.0V. The [ MIC5387 ]/[ 85 ] provides very fast transient response to any load change, and up to 70dB of PSRR for noise sensitive applications. The [ MIC5387 ]/[ 85 ] achieves this in spite of only consuming 32µA typical per channel while enabled. This combination of compact integration, high performance and low power consumption makes the [ MIC5387 ]/[ 85 ] suitable for most applications in portable electronics. The [ MIC5387 ]/[ 85 ] is a µCap design operating with very small ceramic output capacitors, which additionally reduces required board space. This series offers full protection circuitry including current limit and thermal shutdown protection, and an operating junction temperature range of -40degC to 125degC.
