  • Oracle will continue its efforts to support and protect the environment and to helping customers with their green efforts, by focusing on [ green initiatives ] throughout the [ Oracle® OpenWorld ] conference, held October 11-15, 2009 at Moscone Center in San Francisco.
  • Dedicated programming throughout the event will focus on the environment and the eco-enterprise. Highlights will include:
    • Interactive discussions, led by Oracle executives, customers and partners, on effective strategies for using Oracle technology to create sustainable programs, achieving transparency and innovation, improving operational efficiency and gaining visibility into energy usage and carbon footprints;
    • Oracle's [ 'Enable the Eco-Enterprise' ] awards will be presented to 15 winning customers and their partners on Monday, October 12 by Jeff Henley, Oracle's Chairman of the Board. This session will be held at 2:30 pm in Moscone West, Room 2003. The awards will honor companies who apply Oracle's technology for effective environmental practices, while reducing their costs and improving their business efficiencies by utilizing more green practices; and
    • [ The Oracle OpenWorld Green Marketplace ], where Oracle, its partners and customers will exhibit solutions and create interactive experiences to demonstrate how they are incorporating sustainability into their business and IT plans.

Reducing Environmental Footprint

  • For the past several years, Oracle has committed to reducing the environmental impact of its global events and has taken innovative steps to achieve this goal.
  • Last year, Oracle was able to divert 60 tons of waste from local landfills, save nearly 1,000 trees by minimizing paper usage and print materials, and donate 2,000 pounds of unused food to local charities.
  • This year, the company will continue to incorporate its "rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle" philosophy into event practices and operations. Efforts will include:
    • A drive toward paperless meetings and events. Oracle OpenWorld will use online methods of communication whenever possible, from electronic ticketing and reservation systems to online registration, agendas and conference collateral, as well as on-demand programming for full conference attendees.
    • A green exhibit floor. Oracle encourages its exhibitors to reduce lights and power usage, provide online exhibitor kits/service to reduce printing; use recyclable, environmentally responsible signage products, carpets, and packing and shipping materials; offset transportation emissions with a carbon offset program; and provide and manage a donation area for exhibitors to collect donated items.
    • Green conference practices. Oracle OpenWorld will incorporate extensive recycling efforts, use biodegradable name badges, holders, lanyards, and exhibit hall bags; energy-efficient copiers and fax machines; and printers that use recycled and recyclable printer cartridges. Additionally, the conference is committed to having no plastic water bottles onsite. Conference attendees will be provided with refillable water bottles and there will be water stations available throughout the show.
    • Support of the [ Million Tons of Trash ] challenge, an effort by event industry leaders intended to divert the amount of trash from landfill across the entire event industry. Oracle's goal for Oracle OpenWorld 2009 is to divert 100 tons of waste from landfill.
  • In addition, 60 Oracle Volunteers will join Friends of the Urban Forest to plant trees in neighborhoods around Moscone Center on Saturday, October 10.
