Data Domain: Data Domain Wins 2008 Product of the Year in SearchStorage.com and Storage Magazine
SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - February 25, 2009) - Data Domain, Inc. (
With one of the fastest user adoption rates of any newly introduced Data Domain system, the DD690 established new benchmarks across a spectrum of common data center data protection metrics. The DD690 consistently delivers higher levels of single-stream and aggregate throughput performance, advanced replication, and optimized backup and archive features using significantly less disk hardware. With Data Domain, large enterprise users who relied on complex tape infrastructure or over provisioned VTLs can now cost-effectively address long-term online data retention, eliminate tape from operational recovery and dramatically reduce data center power, cooling and footprint requirements.
"It is a great honor to again be given this award," said Beth White, VP of Marketing at Data Domain. "We created the first inline deduplication storage system in 2004, and since its debut, the DD690 has been Data Domain's most in-demand system. This system is more than an order of magnitude faster, larger and impactful to customers. This award is yet another proof point of Data Domain's deduplication leadership among large enterprise storage providers."
Data Domain has now won Storage Product of the Year awards four times, underscoring its commitment to innovation and delivering products that drive efficiency into the enterprise storage infrastructure.
The 2008 Products of the Year were awarded by editors of TechTarget's Storage Media Group, in conjunction with a team of users, industry experts, analysts and consultants. Judges selected the 15 "Products of the Year" from enterprise storage-related products introduced, upgraded, and shipped between October 27, 2007 and October 27, 2008.
About the DD690
The DD690's price/performance is enabled by the Data Domain SISL™ (Stream-Informed Segment Layout) scaling architecture to minimize the number of disk accesses required in the deduplication process. Unlike many competing approaches, Data Domain systems ride the price/performance wave of multi-core processor architectures rather than depending on over-provisioned storage subsystems for throughput. As a result, Data Domain systems based on dual-socket controllers and minimum SATA-based storage configurations have improved in throughput by nearly a factor of ten from 2004 (150 GB/hour) to 2008 (1.4 TB/hour).
With the Data Domain Replicator Software option, the DD690 can automate WAN vaulting for use in disaster recovery, remote office backup, or multi-site tape consolidation. A single DD690 system can support a replication fan-in from up to 60 remote offices and can deduplicate globally across remote sites, further minimizing required bandwidth since only the first instance of data is transferred across any of the WAN segments.
Like all Data Domain systems, the new DD690 is simple to install and flexible enough to be implemented into existing user environments without disruption. Backed by Data Domain's available 24x7x365 enterprise class service, the DD690 supports leading backup and archive software products on any standard storage fabric, including 10Gb Ethernet options. The DD690 is available as an easy-to-deploy appliance, or as the DD690g Gateway, which supports external SAN disk array storage.
