Prime Medicine, known for its goal of treating hundreds of diseases with CRISPR, says it's narrowing its focus to two. It also announced big layoffs and a new CEO.

Prime Medicine, a biotech company focused on gene editing, announced on May 19, 2025, that it is laying off 20% of its workforce and that its CEO, Keith Gottesdiener, will step down. The layoffs are part of a strategic restructuring to extend the company's cash runway and prioritize its most promising programs. Gottesdiener, who has led the company since its inception in 2020, will be replaced by the company's chief scientific officer, David Liu, on an interim basis while a search for a permanent CEO is conducted. The company's lead program, PM359, which targets chronic granulomatous disease, remains on track for an investigational new drug application filing in the second half of 2025.
