A prehistoric hell ant that lived among dinosaurs 113 million years ago had an unusual way to kill its prey and sheds new light on insect evolution, researchers have found.

The article from Yahoo News discusses the discovery of the oldest known ant fossil, named "Gerontoformica gracilis," found in Charentes, France, dating back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 99 million years ago. This significant find, encased in amber, provides evidence that ants coexisted with dinosaurs and sheds light on their early evolution and social behavior. The fossil, which is remarkably well-preserved, shows that this ancient ant species had already developed some of the physical characteristics seen in modern ants, suggesting that ants were more advanced at that time than previously thought. The discovery was detailed in a study published in the journal "Cretaceous Research," highlighting the importance of this fossil in understanding the evolutionary history of ants.
