Scientists working for Dallas-based biotech company Colossal Biosciences claim to have brought the dire wolf, which went extinct about 12,500 years ago, back to life.

Scientists have successfully sequenced the genome of a dire wolf, an extinct species that roamed North America until about 10,000 years ago, using DNA extracted from a 50,000-year-old fossil found in Wyoming. The study, published in the journal Nature, revealed that the dire wolf is not closely related to gray wolves or any other living canid species, but instead represents a distinct lineage that diverged from other canids around 5.7 million years ago. This finding challenges previous theories that dire wolves were closely related to gray wolves and suggests that they were a unique species adapted to a different ecological niche. The research also provides insights into the evolutionary history of canids and could help inform conservation efforts for living species.
