  • Divers, underwater submersibles and remotely operated vehicles found 886 marine species over a 16-month period, and they have all been deemed new to science.

The ambitious effort to document marine life, known as the Census of Marine Life, has led to the discovery of 866 new species, with the number still growing. This project, which began in 2000 and concluded its first phase in 2010, involved over 2,700 scientists from 80 countries. They explored various ocean depths, from the sunlit surface to the darkest depths, revealing a vast array of previously unknown marine organisms. Notable findings include new species of fish, corals, crustaceans, and microorganisms. The ongoing research continues to add to this tally, enhancing our understanding of marine biodiversity and the complex ecosystems beneath the waves. This initiative not only showcases the richness of ocean life but also underscores the need for conservation efforts to protect these newly discovered species and their habitats.
