Astronaut set to patch NASA's X-ray telescope aboard space station
- NASA astronaut Nick Hague will install patches to the agency's NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer) X-ray telescope on the International Space Station as part of a spacewalk scheduled for Jan.
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are preparing to conduct a spacewalk to repair NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which has been in operation for over two decades. The mission involves replacing a critical component, the Aspect Camera Assembly, which helps the telescope maintain its precise pointing accuracy. This repair is crucial as the Chandra telescope has been experiencing issues with its orientation, affecting its ability to capture high-resolution X-ray images of celestial bodies. The spacewalk, scheduled for the near future, will be executed by astronauts trained for such delicate operations in space, highlighting NASA's commitment to extending the life and functionality of its aging but still scientifically valuable space assets.
