  • Space missions to the moon, Mars and beyond often get the most attention, but NASA's Near Space Network does a lot of heavy lifting for humankind's reach for the stars.

NASA has awarded contracts to six companies to enhance its Near Space Network (NSN), which supports communications for missions in low Earth orbit and lunar orbit. The companies involved are Cesium Astro, Inc., General Dynamics Mission Systems, Inc., Inmarsat Government, Inc., KBR Wyle Services, LLC, L3Harris Technologies, Inc., and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX). These contracts, valued at a total of $47.7 million, aim to provide new services like optical communications, navigation, and delay-tolerant networking, as well as to expand the network's capabilities to handle increased data demands from future missions. The NSN, managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, is crucial for providing tracking, telemetry, command, and data services to various space missions, ensuring robust communication infrastructure for both current and future space exploration endeavors.
