  • Researchers have documented a rare supernova, 2023ufx, the most metal-poor stellar explosion observed, located in a dwarf galaxy. This finding is crucial as it mirrors the early universe's conditions,

Astronomers have discovered a rare type of supernova, named SN 2022qmx, located in the galaxy ESO 580-49, which could potentially rewrite our understanding of cosmic history. This supernova, observed using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), is notable for its high redshift, indicating it occurred when the universe was just 1.8 billion years old. Unlike typical supernovas, SN 2022qmx is a core-collapse supernova from a massive star, but it lacks hydrogen and helium, suggesting it might be a "pulsational pair-instability" supernova. This type of supernova occurs when a star's core undergoes violent pulsations due to pair production, leading to explosive mass loss before the final explosion. The findings challenge existing models of stellar evolution and supernova mechanisms, offering new insights into the early universe's star formation and the physics of massive stars.
