Aruba Networks, Inc.: World's First FIPS 140-2 Validated 802.11N Solution Raises the Standard for Secure Wireless Networking

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - August 18, 2009) - Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ ARUN ]), a global leader in wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions, today announced that it is the first wireless LAN vendor to have its 802.11n solution and ArubaOS Release 3 validated within the FIPS 140-2 Federal Information Processing Standard for cryptographic security. The validation encompasses Aruba's 200, 800, 3000 and 6000 Series Multi-Service Mobility Controllers, 802.11a/b/g/n indoor and outdoor access points, resilient mesh software, and Remote Access Point (RAP) technology. Leveraging field-proven hardware platforms and software applications allows Aruba to deliver a rich feature set with predictable performance, avoiding the throughput bottlenecks, degraded reliability, management issues, and added expense associated with add-on security appliances.

"Secure indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi uses extend from foxholes to fortresses, from local facilities and depots to remote sites. Newly enabled applications include secure network rightsizing -- replacing expensive wired Ethernet system with secure 802.11n wireless -- and linking users to a Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET) from a Non-Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNET) via secure wireless or remote access network. Aruba leads the wireless LAN industry in supporting such a wide range of high security, Wi-Fi based applications."

The FIPS 140-2 standard specifies the cryptographic security requirements for sensitive but unclassified information. The standard defines multiple levels of security that correspond with the wide range of potential applications and environments in which such systems may be employed. FIPS 140-2 validated Aruba Release 3 networks using remote networking and mesh have already been successfully deployed at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense Medical Health System facilities, and select U.S. Air Force bases worldwide.

Aruba's 802.11n solutions combine wire-like performance with unique features designed to lower deployment costs and enhance security:

 -- 802.3af power over Ethernet lowers installation costs; -- Software reconfiguration allows repurposing for connectivity, mesh, intrusion sensor, and remote access applications -- one access point, many uses; -- Trusted Platform Module (TPM) securely stores device configuration data to protect network integrity even if the access point is probed or stolen; -- Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) enhances performance by managing Wi-Fi client behavior without requiring a client plug-in or proprietary client adaptations. 

The efficacy of Aruba's 802.11n and ARM technologies has been validated in demanding field tests. ARM has been demonstrated to increase 802.11n throughput by more than 200% in a mixed-client network. The classified communication requirements could not have been satisfied with any other Wi-Fi platform."

Aruba stands alone as the only vendor with an 802.11n solution that meets essential Government security standards: FIPS 140-2 and Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 8100.2. DoD Directive 8100.2 spells out policies for deploying and monitoring secure wireless networks comprised of commercial wireless devices, services, and technologies in the DoD Global Information Grid. Among other criteria, Directive 8100.2 requires data encryption, strong authentication, non-repudiation, personal identification, and use of the 802.11i Wi-Fi security standard. Compliance with the directive was a prerequisite for U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and Tri-Service Infrastructure Management Program Office (TIMPO) projects currently using Aruba wireless LANs.

It is expected that Aruba's completion of Common Criteria EAL-4 validation, currently in progress, will also open additional new government, financial, and commercial applications worldwide. The Common Criteria, also known as ISO standard 15408, addresses the protection of assets from unauthorized disclosure, modification, or loss of use arising from both intentional and unintentional causes. It both defines a set of security functionality requirements for IT hardware, software, and firmware products, and, through a rigorous evaluation process, ensures that those requirements have been satisfied.
