Google 'Willow' quantum chip has solved a problem the best supercomputer would have taken a quadrillion times the age of the universe to crack

Google's quantum computing team has developed a new chip named "Willow," which has demonstrated the ability to solve a complex problem in seconds that would take the world's most powerful supercomputer, Frontier, an estimated 47.2 years to solve. This problem involved simulating a quantum circuit with 70 qubits, a task that would take Frontier approximately 1.1 quadrillion times the age of the universe to complete if it were to attempt it. This achievement showcases the potential of quantum computing to tackle problems far beyond the reach of classical computers, highlighting a significant leap in computational capability. The experiment not only underscores the progress in quantum computing technology but also emphasizes the practical applications of quantum supremacy, where quantum computers perform tasks unfeasible for classical systems.
