Ocean Discovery Institute forced to layoff AmeriCorps teachers because of cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency.

The Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) program at the City Heights Educational Enrichment Center in San Diego, which has been providing free science education to underserved students for 15 years, is facing significant budget cuts from the Department of General Services (DOGE). These cuts, amounting to $100,000, could lead to the program's closure, affecting over 1,000 students annually who benefit from hands-on learning experiences in robotics, coding, and other STEAM fields. The center's director, Maria Cortez, expressed concerns about the impact on students, many of whom rely on the program for educational opportunities not available in their schools. Community members and local leaders are rallying to find alternative funding sources to keep the program running, emphasizing its importance in providing critical educational resources to the community.
