  • Prestigious annual award recognizes exceptional achievement in aeronautics and astronautics in America with respect to performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles

The Parker Solar Probe, developed by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), has been awarded the 2025 Robert J. Collier Trophy for its groundbreaking contributions to solar science. This prestigious award, given by the National Aeronautic Association, recognizes the probe's mission to explore the sun's corona, providing unprecedented data on solar wind, magnetic fields, and solar eruptions. The probe, named after astrophysicist Eugene Parker, has made 18 close approaches to the sun, surviving extreme conditions to gather vital information that enhances our understanding of solar phenomena and helps in predicting space weather, which can impact satellite operations, power grids, and astronaut safety. The award not only celebrates the technological and scientific achievements of the mission but also acknowledges the collaborative efforts of NASA, APL, and the broader scientific community involved in this historic endeavor.
