  • Developed at NASA JPL, the science instrument gives researchers a more detailed picture of high-temperature surfaces, such as land scorched by wildfire, than previous infrared instruments.

NASA is employing advanced technology to better understand and manage wildfires in California. By integrating data from various sources, including satellite imagery, airborne sensors, and ground-based observations, NASA's FireSense project aims to enhance wildfire prediction, detection, and response. This initiative uses machine learning algorithms to analyze patterns in fire behavior, helping to predict fire spread more accurately. Additionally, NASA's technology helps in assessing post-fire impacts on ecosystems, air quality, and water resources, providing critical information for recovery efforts. The project collaborates with other agencies like the U.S. Forest Service to refine firefighting strategies and improve community preparedness against the increasing threat of wildfires exacerbated by climate change.
