  • "Solar heat drives atmospheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rock properties," the researchers said.

Scientists have proposed that solar activity, particularly the sun's magnetic field, might influence seismic activity on Earth, potentially triggering earthquakes. This theory stems from observations of a correlation between solar storms, which are disturbances on the sun that can affect Earth's magnetic field, and an increase in seismic activity. Researchers from the Royal Observatory of Belgium and the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed data spanning several decades and found that significant earthquakes often occur within a few days of solar storms. They suggest that these solar events could cause changes in the Earth's magnetic field, which in turn might induce stress changes in the Earth's crust, possibly leading to earthquakes. However, the link between solar activity and earthquakes remains controversial, with many scientists arguing that the evidence is not yet conclusive enough to establish a direct causal relationship.
