  • First, it was the possibility of a longer school year, now Ohio students might face tougher graduation requirements. Two Republican lawmakers want students to pass a computer science course to graduate.

The Ohio Department of Education is proposing changes to the state's graduation requirements to better align with the updated learning standards and to provide more flexibility for students. The proposed changes include replacing the current end-of-course exams with a new competency component that could involve a combination of assessments, projects, or other demonstrations of competency. Additionally, there is a suggestion to introduce a "readiness" component, where students would need to show they are prepared for post-high school life through various indicators like college credit, military enlistment, or workforce training. These changes aim to reflect a more comprehensive view of student readiness for future endeavors, moving away from a heavy reliance on standardized testing. The Ohio State Board of Education is set to vote on these proposals in June.
