  • Three Michigan Starbase programs, supported by the U.S. Department of Defense, closed abruptly Friday due to funding issues.

The Michigan Youth STEM Program, which provided hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math education to students across the state, has abruptly shut down due to the expiration of federal funding. The program, which was supported by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, ended its operations on February 1, 2025, leaving many students, parents, and educators disappointed. The initiative had been instrumental in offering after-school and summer programs that not only boosted STEM education but also aimed at closing the achievement gap in these critical subjects. Efforts are underway to seek alternative funding sources or partnerships to potentially revive the program.
