Engineers design new autonomous system to monitor Arctic's melting ice

Engineers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks have developed a new autonomous system called the "Drone-Based Autonomous Sea Ice Monitoring" (DASIM) to monitor the melting ice in the Arctic. This innovative system uses drones equipped with advanced sensors to collect real-time data on ice thickness, temperature, and salinity. The project aims to provide more accurate and frequent data than traditional methods, which often rely on satellite imagery or sporadic field expeditions. By deploying drones, the system can cover vast and remote areas of the Arctic, offering insights into the rapid changes occurring due to climate change. This data is crucial for understanding the impacts of global warming on Arctic ecosystems, navigation routes, and local wildlife, and could help in formulating better predictive models for ice melt and sea level rise.
