At least 11 districts, including Patna, Alappuzha and Kendrapara, are at a "very high" risk for both floods and droughts, necessitating immediate intervention, according to a climate risk assessment report compiled by two IITs.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has released a climate report highlighting the severe flood and drought risks in 11 districts across Bihar, Kerala, and Odisha. The study, part of the Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (CVRA) project, identifies these regions as particularly vulnerable due to their geographical and climatic conditions. Districts like Patna, Darbhanga, and Madhubani in Bihar; Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Thrissur in Kerala; and Cuttack, Khordha, and Puri in Odisha are at high risk. The report warns of increased flooding due to heavy rainfall and rising sea levels, alongside drought conditions from erratic monsoon patterns. It emphasizes the need for enhanced disaster preparedness, infrastructure resilience, and community awareness to mitigate the impacts of these extreme weather events.
