  • A new Chinese-led study into the evolution of dinosaurs has offered a timely warning to our technology-reliant world.

A recent study published in the journal Trends in Ecology & Evolution suggests that dinosaurs, particularly theropods like T. rex, experienced a decline in brainpower over time, potentially due to their large body sizes which made them less vulnerable to predators, reducing the evolutionary pressure to maintain high intelligence. The research, led by Kai Caspar from Heinrich Heine University in Germany, analyzed the brain size relative to body mass in various dinosaur species, finding that while some dinosaurs like Troodon had high neuron counts, others like T. rex had significantly fewer. This trend of decreasing intelligence could theoretically apply to humans if we were to evolve into larger sizes, as the study posits that the need for intelligence might diminish with increased body size and safety from predation. However, the researchers caution that this is a speculative scenario, and current human evolution might be driven by different factors like social complexity and technology.
