Oracle Grants Compatibility Testing Scholarship to the Eclipse Foundation

Further Demonstrates Commitment to Java Developers and Open Source Community by Providing Technology Compatibility Kits and Support Services for Two Eclipse Projects

  • Oracle today announced that it has awarded Compatibility Testing Scholarships to the [ Eclipse Foundation ] for the [ EclipseLink ] and [ Virgo ] projects.
  • The Oracle Compatibility Testing Scholarship Program helps to ensure that the Technology Compatibility Kits (TCK) for Oracle's Java technology specifications, including support services, are available and accessible to not-for-profit organizations, as well as colleges and universities.
  • The Eclipse Foundation will use the TCKs to test the EclipseLink and Virgo technologies and ensure compatibility with [ Java Platform, Enterprise Edition ] (Java EE).
    • The EclipseLink project delivers a comprehensive open-source Java persistence solution addressing relational, XML and database web services. EclipseLink serves as the reference implementation for Java Persistence API (JPA) Specification, including the latest Java Specification Request (JSR) 338, for JPA 2.1.
    • The Virgo Web Server from EclipseRT is a completely module-based, lightweight Java application server for developing, deploying, and servicing enterprise Java applications. One of the goals of the Virgo project is to create a compliant implementation of the Java EE Web Profile specification.
  • Java EE 7, the next generation of Java EE, is targeted for release in the second quarter of 2013.
  • The Java EE 7 JSRs are being developed in a transparent manner through the [ Java Community Process ] (JCP) by hundreds of engineers from over 30 organizations, including the Eclipse Foundation, with expert group communications and working materials available publicly.
