MSO Demonstrates Downstream Data Speeds in Excess of 1.3 Gbit/s

SUWANEE, Ga., Sept. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ARRIS (Nasdaq: ARRS)todayannounced that in a recent field trial in Vienna, its customer UPC Austria achieved a remarkable sustained maximum downstream Internet speed of 1.3 gigabits per second - over a live network consisting of fibre optic and conventional coaxial cable. This data speed far eclipses what DSL operators can offer in Austria and provides further evidence of the future viability of UPC's Fibre Power Network.  The tests were conducted over a live network with the DOCSIS® 3.0 ARRIS C4® CMTS with downstream channel bonding and Touchstone® data modems, all of which are commercially available today. The data speeds demonstrated in the field trial downloaded an HD movie in less than two minutes and more than 100 songs in less than five seconds.

While a commercial launch of such speeds may not yet be a reality (UPC currently offers up to 100 Mbp/s speeds), the success of the trial proves that UPC now has a telecommunications network that can be configured for peak performance.  "Our network infrastructure is very solid and with the advanced technology of our high quality Fibre Power Network, UPC customers are equipped for the demands of tomorrow," said Thomas Hintze, CEO of UPC Austria.  "This test shows that our fibre-coaxial structure is ready to reach speeds in excess of 1 Gbit/s.  In association with our silicon and hardware suppliers, like ARRIS, we look forward to bringing these exciting features and powerful products to market."
