For more than two decades, the Design News Awards Program has recognized engineering innovation and creativity in product design. This year, Golden Mousetrap awards were given in four major categories: Electronics & Test, Automation & Control, Design Tools: Hardware & Software, and Materials & Assembly. This year's finalists were chosen by Design News editors from a record number of entries.
"The products highlighted in this year's Golden Mousetrap winners and finalists clearly demonstrate both cutting-edge design ideas and the practical evolution of technologies for systems and product design engineers. Design News congratulates all the engineers and their companies who have been recognized with the Golden Mousetrap Award, and we are grateful for their contribution to this year's competition," said David Greenfield, editorial director at Design News.
Vishay's Hi-Rel COTS T97 and commercial, industrial-grade 597D series are the industry's first 75 V solid tantalum chip capacitors. The devices provide high reliability in circuits with applied voltages between 25 V and 40 V, a performance level that has previously been available only with through-hole technology. The T97 and 597D feature a capacitance range of 10 to 1,500 microfarads, ESR down to 0.015 ohms at + 25 °C, and a voltage range from 4 V to 75 V in nine case sizes, including the "V" case with a low 2-mm profile. The T97 series offers designers a wide array of ratings not found in available MIL specifications, combining the flexibility and convenience of a commercial product with the reliability needed in demanding applications.
As the industry's first 80 V power MOSFET to offer an on-resistance rating at a 4.5 V gate drive, Vishay's ThunderFET SiR880DP allows for higher-frequency designs, while lowering costs by enabling the use of 5 V PWM ICs. The SiR880DP's very low on-resistance of 8.5 milliohms at 4.5 V, 6.7 milliohms at 7.5 V, and 5.9 milliohms at 10 V translates into reduced power consumption and greener solutions, especially at light loads such as stand-by mode. Typical on-resistance times gate charge, a key figure of merit (FOM, expressed in nC-milliohms) for MOSFETs in DC/DC converter applications, is 161 at 4.5 V.
