MORRISVILLE, NC--(Marketwire - March 29, 2011) - [ Tekelec ] (NASDAQ: [ TKLC ]), the mobile broadband solutions company, is recognized by the Frost & Sullivan "New Product Innovation Award, Diameter Routing" for its superior ability to help operators overcome Diameter signaling challenges in LTE networks. Frost & Sullivan selected Tekelec's [ Diameter Signaling Router ] (DSR) as the best product to manage Diameter performance, scalability, security, cost and interoperability needs.

LTE networks feature a new all-internet protocol (IP) core network with equipment from numerous best-in-class vendors. Each vendor uses its own dialect of Diameter to communicate essential policy, charging, authentication, quality of service and mobility management functions. The resulting architecture calls for new solutions to manage LTE complexity. In addition, the evolution of pre-LTE networks is creating similar challenges, requiring a Diameter router to also support many of today's 3G networks.

"Tekelec's Diameter Signaling Router creates a centralized signaling architecture for routing, traffic management and load balancing," said Anand Srinivasan, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "This enables LTE networks to grow incrementally to support increasing service and traffic demands."

Frost & Sullivan independently identified Diameter Routing as a new award category due to at least 60 LTE networks anticipated to be in commercial service by the end of 2012, creating "rapid uptake in Diameter signaling." The report, which highlighted "how to scale and simplify all these connection points, as well as manage the costs" as the key challenges, analyzed the industry's Diameter routing providers and nominated three finalists for further evaluation based on five key criteria. Tekelec won each of the five categories:

  • Innovative Element of the Product
    • "DSR's ability to centralize the mediation of different Diameter variants differentiates this solution from competing products. This feature deserves special attention because it brings immediate benefits to the network in terms of cost efficiency and scalability."
    • "The DSR creates a standards-based Diameter signaling core in IP networks that provides the bandwidth to support data-hungry devices and applications. DSR can be deployed as an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Diameter Agent, 3GPP Diameter Routing Agent (DRA) or GSMA Diameter Edge Agent (DEA). These innovative elements permit the DSR to gain significant advantage against its competitors."
  • Leverage Leading Edge Technologies in Product
    • "Tekelec has leveraged its [ EAGLE XG ] platform to provide a robust, reliable, high-availability solution for Diameter routing agents. This platform allows Tekelec to offer a high-capacity, low latency solution that supports multiple applications for added synergy with other Tekelec products such as policy, performance management and subscriber data management...these unique attributes of the DSR enable Tekelec to gain significant advantage against its competitors."
  • Value Added Features/Benefits
    • "Home Subscriber Server (HSS) address resolution, stateful session binding for PCRF and dynamic load balancing... are expected to increase the adoption of the DSR by various telecom/network operators."
  • Increased Customer ROI
    • "The DSR with its centralized routing capability reduces the complexity and improves the scalability of the core LTE network. The router also lowers operational expenditure (OPEX) by simplifying provisioning and updates and creates a more flexible architecture."
    • "This product innovation and the customer-specific services transform into cost effectiveness and increased operational benefits for end-users."
  • Customer Acquisition/Penetration Potential
    • "Tekelec has consistently anticipated the evolution of the telecom market and developed this technology embedded product to address changing network complexities, enabling its customers to deliver their own innovative products and services."
    • "Tekelec holds 13 patents and has applied for another 50 relating to Diameter control plane session management and routing."

Tekelec [ introduced the DSR ] in October 2010 and has been [ selected by MetroPCS ] for the first North American LTE network. The DSR provides a single connection point for all Diameter traffic, providing use cases such as managing in-network and out-of-network roaming (from 2G/3G to LTE or LTE-to-LTE), scaling any Diameter-based network, mediating Diameter messages, and defending networks against potential overloads or attacks of Diameter signaling messages.
