SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - February 10, 2009) - Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ ARUN ]), a global leader in wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions, today announced that the Barcelona campus of Universitas Telefónica (UT) has deployed Aruba's high-speed 802.11n wireless network for data and voice applications used by faculty, staff, students, and guests. Based in Spain, Telefónica is a leading private global telecommunications company with 249,000 employees and more than 233 million customers. UT offers academic training to employees on leadership development, best-practices, and strategic analysis. UT's teaching methodology leverages both in-person and extensive on-line resources, and a state-of-the-art wireless network was required for its new campus in Barcelona. After an extensive market review, Telefónica selected Aruba 802.11a/b/g/n access points and Multi-Service Mobility Controllers to provide pervasive mobile data and dual mode IP telephony wireless coverage throughout the campus.

"Universitas Telefónica sits at the crossroads of the corporate world and higher education, and it needed a wireless network that would bridge the two," said Eduardo Ballesteros Martinez, Engineering Manager responsible for the deployment of UT's wireless network. "To meet our corporate objectives that required low life-cycle costs, high security, and a highly integrated solution that would be inexpensive to maintain. For our advanced electronic learning initiatives we needed high performance Wi-Fi, pervasive coverage, and the capacity for growth. Aruba delivered it all. Their commitment to creating a secure and truly mobile workplace, backed by a world-class support organization, set them apart from all the other competitors."

To deliver a best-in-class wireless experience, Aruba's Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) software lowers deployment and maintenance costs by automating site surveys and using infrastructure-based controls to optimize the performance of Wi-Fi clients in real-time. Acting on their own, Wi-Fi clients do not always work cooperatively with other clients, or select the optimal band, channel, and access point. These issues are exacerbated in settings with densely packed users such as university lecture halls and libraries. ARM uses a variety of techniques to control how Wi-Fi clients interact, thereby ensuring that data, voice, and video applications have sufficient network resources, including airtime, to operate properly.

Aruba's centralized network management architecture lowers IT operating expenses by simplifying network set-up, expansion, and updates. Whether managing a single campus or a multi-national enterprise, the centralized architecture requires minimal IT staff overhead. An integrated ICSA-certified stateful firewall enforces policies for both permanent and guest users, and offers unparalleled flexibility with respect to creating user groups. Guest access control delivers a very high standard of security and can be easily managed by non-technical clerical staff.

"UT has the very dynamic, performance-oriented environment typical of a university, and the security and manageability requirements of a corporation," said Jose Tormo, Aruba's Iberia territory manager. "Such a demanding deployment scenario is beyond the scope of most mobility solutions, but not so with Aruba. Our automated ARM technology, easy-to-use centralized management, and integrated security were tailor-made for such a deployment. We look forward to a long and close relationship with UT as their requirements evolve in the years ahead."
