SANTA CLARA, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE), today announced that the McAfee® Network Security PlatformM-8000 appliance is the first Network Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) to receive the ‘10-Gigabit IPS' certification as part of NSS Labs' 10 Gbps IPS Group Test. The certification procedure represents the industry's most stringent test criteria available. IPS devices are subjected to a brutal battery of real world tests in a sophisticated lab environment, and testing that evaluates four main areas: performance, security effectiveness, usability, and stability.

This certification is issued as a result of an extensive and rigorous testing methodology specifically for 10-Gigabit network IPS devices. As a testament to the significance of the testing, analyst firm Gartner now evaluates a vendor's "completeness of vision" based on the successful results of third-party testing, such as the NSS Labs IPS test, for inclusion in the coveted Magic Quadrant for Network IPS.

"The McAfee Network Security Platform M-8000 appliance is the first network IPS solution to receive our 10 Gbps certification. Security effectiveness at 10 Gbps speeds is more than ten times harder than at 1 Gbps. McAfee can be proud of its achievements on such a rigorous test methodology," said Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs. "Because of our focus on real-world use cases, NSS Labs certifications are a requirement for many organizations when deciding which products to purchase."

According to the NSS Labs report, the McAfee Network Security Platform M-8000 appliance achieved exceptional results in virtually every major test category; including security effectiveness, performance, stability and reliability, and management and usability. "The security effectiveness of the McAfee M-8000 appliance was nearly perfect in all categories, catching 618 of 622 exploits (99.4%). The product had no trouble identifying attacks, even when obfuscated using a wide range of evasion techniques. Resistance to false positives appeared to be high, even under our most strenuous tests." NSS praised the Network Security Manager software, declaring it well designed and suited to manage and configure large numbers of NIPS sensors across the enterprise. In conclusion, NSS states that the McAfee M-8000 appliance is a very fast, flexible, and accurate Network Intrusion Prevention System and should be on everyone's short list for 10 Gbps Internal Datacenter, E-commerce Datacenter, and Corporate Perimeter protection.

"As customers plan and implement 10-Gigabit network upgrades, they need to know that their protection capabilities scale with them. NSS established the de facto standard for IPS testing and is great third party validation that McAfee's customers can be assured that their McAfee Network Intrusion Prevention System investment will scale and continue to provide protection, performance and compliance," said Rees Johnson, general manager and senior vice president of network IPS solutions for McAfee.
