The National Science Foundation (NSF) is celebrating its 70th anniversary amidst challenges, including a budget that has not kept pace with inflation and a looming government shutdown that could disrupt its operations. Established in 1950, the NSF has been instrumental in advancing U.S. scientific research, supporting projects from the discovery of gravitational waves to the development of the internet. However, its current budget of $8.8 billion is effectively less than in previous years due to inflation, and a proposed increase to $11.3 billion for 2023 is unlikely to pass Congress.
