Scientists have discovered hidden ice quakes deep within Greenland's ice streams for the first time, revealing new insights into the dynamics of ice movement and its implications for global sea level rise. These ice quakes, detected through seismic sensors, occur as the ice streams, which are fast-moving corridors of ice within the Greenland Ice Sheet, experience sudden slips and movements. The study, published in the journal "Science Advances," indicates that these quakes are caused by the interaction between the ice and the underlying bedrock, where friction and pressure build up until the ice suddenly shifts. This phenomenon could help in better predicting the behavior of ice sheets under changing climate conditions, potentially refining models of ice loss and its contribution to rising sea levels.
