  • When the International Space Station (ISS) is retired at the end of the decade, a collection of commercial space outposts will replace it.

NASA, in collaboration with private companies like Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman, and Sierra Space, is developing a new space ecosystem to succeed the International Space Station (ISS). This initiative, known as the Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations (CLDs) program, aims to foster a sustainable, commercially-driven presence in low Earth orbit. The project includes the development of new space stations, such as Orbital Reef by Blue Origin and Sierra Space's LIFE habitat, which are designed to support scientific research, commercial activities, and potentially space tourism. These new platforms are intended to be more cost-effective, technologically advanced, and capable of supporting a broader range of activities than the ISS. The transition is part of NASA's broader strategy to shift from government-operated to commercially-operated space stations, thereby reducing costs and promoting a vibrant space economy.
