The Indian government has selected 31 universities, including IIT Bombay and IISER Pune, as "hub universities" to lead research initiatives under the National Research Foundation (NRF) Bill. These institutions will guide research at "spoke institutes," which include colleges and universities with limited research facilities. The initiative aims to foster a collaborative research environment, enhance the research capabilities of less-equipped institutions, and promote innovation across the country. The selection was made by a committee led by Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, former ISRO chairman, focusing on universities with strong research credentials to act as mentors in this hub-and-spoke model.
