As part of the agency's efforts to enable broader use of space, NASA has released its final goals and objectives for low Earth orbit, defining the long-term approach toward advancing microgravity science,
NASA has outlined a comprehensive strategy to ensure a sustained human presence in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) beyond the International Space Station (ISS), which is set to retire by the end of the decade. The strategy includes transitioning from government-led to a commercially driven LEO ecosystem, where private companies will develop and operate space stations. NASA plans to leverage its experience with the ISS to foster this new era, focusing on safety, reliability, and economic viability. Key elements of the strategy involve:

  • Commercialization: Encouraging private sector investment and innovation in space habitats, with companies like Axiom Space, Blue Origin, and Nanoracks already working on commercial space stations.

  • Partnerships: Continuing international collaborations while also engaging with new partners to expand the user base for LEO destinations.

  • Technology Development: Investing in technologies that will enable long-term human habitation, including life support systems, radiation protection, and in-space manufacturing.

  • Economic Sustainability: Ensuring that commercial platforms can generate revenue through various means like tourism, research, and manufacturing, thereby reducing reliance on government funding.

  • Safety and Standards: Establishing standards for safety, interoperability, and data sharing to ensure a seamless transition and operation of new space stations.

    This approach aims to not only maintain but also expand humanity's footprint in space, making LEO a hub for scientific research, commercial activities, and a stepping stone for deeper space exploration.
